Tamara Mena : Peer Support Volunteer

Tamara Mena

Meet Tamara Mena, a communications major at CSU Stanislaus-Turlock. Tamara is a vivacious young woman with life-long goals to help others. Her ambition is to work in public relations within a hospital setting, helping doctors and nurses to communicate with spinal-cord injured patients.

Tamara's journey with a spinal-cord injury began five years ago when she was involved in a horrible taxi accident that took the life of Patrick Riner, her boyfriend of three years, and the taxi driver. Tamara suffered a T2/T3 injury.

It is difficult to see Tamara's injury. She is so thankful to have survived the accident, which depended on the fast action of her boyfriend, who pushed her down and protected her with his body.

Tamara has a wonderful story, told in person in the Youtube.com videos linked below. She also has a message for newly injured patients, and a clever solution to making her car easily accessible.

Tamara, you are a wonderful example of a survivor. You choose to avoid the role of victim, and you want your story to be helpful to others. For this, we the spinal-cord injury peer support group thank you. We know you will move mountains on your quest to help others. It has been a pure joy to have gotten to know you a little better.
